Typing and transcription
Manuscript typing and shiur transcription
Every book starts as typed text. A Torah typist can read a rabbi's handwriting, resolve abbreviations, recognise the sources the author quotes – and hand over clean text ready for editing.
On Shulchan Orech you will find typists, manuscript decipherers and transcribers of shiurim, with each one's specialisations and rates, and you can contact them directly.

What kinds of typing are there?
Manuscript typing: notebooks, sheets and writings of rabbis, with nikkud and cantillation when needed.
Deciphering old manuscripts: Rashi script, writings from earlier generations and documents that are hard to read.
Shiur transcription: from a recording to written text, ready to edit and publish.
Why a typist who knows the material?
A typist who does not know Torah language gets abbreviations, book titles and quotations wrong – mistakes that are hard to find later. An experienced typist saves hours of proofreading.
How to start
Send the typist a few sample pages, agree on the format (Word, nikkud, footnotes) and the schedule, and get a quote.
Questions about typing and transcription
- How much does typing a manuscript cost?
- It depends on how legible the handwriting is, the length and whether nikkud is needed; it is usually priced by the page or by the hour. Each typist's profile shows their rates.
- Can I send a scanned manuscript?
- Yes. Most typists work from scans or clear photographs; there is no need to send the original.
- Are shiurim in Yiddish transcribed too?
- Some transcribers work in Hebrew, Yiddish and English. Each profile lists the languages they work in.
